The ATM cave from Belize City, the coast and the cayes

You can see the ATM cave on a day trip from the coast, but it is a long, early and expensive day. Here is what each option costs, and when a night in San Ignacio makes more sense.

Booking choice: The ATM cave trip from Belize City, from $250 per person. Check dates Compare the options below

The cave sits in the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve in the Cayo District, about 45 minutes' drive from San Ignacio. From Belize City, the southern beaches or the islands, you add a long drive (and from the cayes a water taxi) at each end of the day.

That is why the same cave costs $145 from San Ignacio and $245 to $400 from the coast. Below is the honest picture for each starting point.

The quick answer

Yes, you can: day trips run from Belize City ($250, 10 hours), Placencia ($245, starting 6:15 AM), Hopkins ($280, private transport) and San Pedro or Caye Caulker ($400, 11 hours, water taxi extra). Expect a 9 to 11 hour day with an early start. If you can, spend a night in San Ignacio instead and take the $145 tour.

Can you do the ATM cave as a day trip from the coast?

Yes, but plan on 9 to 11 hours door to door, an early start, and two to three times the San Ignacio price.

These are the options we found on Viator in 2026. Every one includes a licensed ATM guide; lunch and the entrance fee vary.

How do you get to the ATM cave from Belize City?

Take the Belize City day trip: $250 with hotel pickup, caving gear, lunch and snacks, over about 10 hours.

The tour meets at 111 North Front Street in Belize City and is run by Belize Family Adventure, which also runs one of the $145 San Ignacio tours. The listing asks for a strong fitness level, closed-toe shoes, socks and a full change of clothes. Guests report being picked up on time and a guide with 20 years in the cave.

Can you do the ATM cave from a cruise ship?

Possibly, but it is tight: this is a long, wet day far inland, and the tours here are not built around ship schedules.

If you are in port for the day, ask the operator in writing when the tour gets back to Belize City and compare it with your all-aboard time before you book. We left out the one cruise-focused listing we found because it was non-refundable. If the timing does not work, a shorter excursion is the safer choice; the gentler cave day is compared in ATM cave or cave tubing.

Can you do the ATM cave from Placencia?

Yes: the Placencia trip costs $245, starts at 6:15 AM at Umaya Resort in Maya Beach and is listed at 9 hours.

It includes helmets, headlights, life jackets, lunch and an air-conditioned vehicle, needs at least four people per booking, and is not recommended for kids under 7. The listing names parking fees but not the cave entrance fee, so check that with the operator. With a drive this long at both ends, expect to get back tired.

Can you do the ATM cave from Hopkins?

Yes: the Hopkins trip is $280 with private transport, lunch, water and all fees and taxes, for up to 10 travelers.

It is listed at 9 hours and asks for moderate fitness. Because the transport is private, it is the easiest coast option for a family or small group staying in Hopkins, but it is also the most expensive per person of the mainland trips.

Can you do the ATM cave from San Pedro or Caye Caulker?

Yes, but it is the longest and priciest option: $400 for an 11-hour day, and the water taxi to Belize City is extra.

The tour picks you up at the Belize City water taxi terminal, so it works from either island. It includes the entrance fee, a licensed ATM guide, transport, water and juices, needs at least two people per booking, and asks for a strong fitness level. Catch an early water taxi and expect to be back on the island late.

Is it better to stay a night in San Ignacio?

For most people, yes: the tour costs $145 instead of $245 to $400, and you start fresh about 45 minutes from the cave.

San Ignacio tours still take 7.5 to 9 hours, but without the long drive at each end. Two nights also give you a spare day if heavy rain closes the site, which happens. Guests with only one day in town report it was well spent on the cave. See ATM cave tour prices for the San Ignacio options.

What else can you do from San Ignacio?

Tikal, the great Maya city in Guatemala, is an easy day trip from San Ignacio, and cave tubing is a gentler cave day nearby.

The Tikal day trip ($165) includes pickup, a guided border crossing, the Tikal entrance fee and lunch; bring your passport. For bookings from 18 July 2026 the listing says the Belize departure fee is included.
